Designing Practices and Chapters at Australia's Largest Grocery Technology Business
Major Australian Grocery Retailer (Technology Division)
The Story
We are the digital technology division of a major Australian grocery retailer, supporting other business divisions by managing the underlying technology. Following rapid growth in our online business during COVID-19, we made the decision to reorganise our technology practices and chapters to improve efficiency. Our current chapters span many squads and, at times, tribes, resulting in a poor experience for our team members.
Our Approach
In collaboration with the client, ADAPTOVATE developed a new practice and chapter structure to bring consistency and efficiency across the business.
- Developed a structure where chapter domains are organised around specific areas of the customer journey or business function, with chapters reporting up to domains to ensure consistent engineering and architecture.
- Created a chapter structure where chapter members were allocated across a maximum of three squads.
- Introduced non-people-management leadership positions to create diverse career paths for team members.
- Created Practice Lead roles without people-management responsibilities to strengthen capability development across the business.
Results & Impact
Outcomes
Making the Chapter Lead an active squad contributor saved an estimated $8 million, 5 domains were created to keep 30+ tribes consistent across 3 divisions, and 1,300+ employees were re-homed into the new chapters and domains.
