Our team is the greatest asset we have, and it’s a privilege to share just a little bit more about who they are. This month we feature Janelle Calvert, a consultant in Canada.

First up - how long have you worked with us? 

I started in November 2021

Why did you join us? Were you in the industry previously, or looking for a new career direction?

I spent the first part of my career as an industrial measurement equipment sales engineer and project manager. I loved working with my clients through tough measurement solutions and I had the opportunity to design a number of very interesting gas measurement systems and industrial control systems. While the technical challenges were interesting, what I found proved the greatest challenges were working with systems in operations, and working WITH people - team dynamics and broader organizational dynamics and leadership styles. When I was introduced to ADAPTOVATE I was fascinated with the coaching culture and emphasis on new ways of working - and I thought that this is what I want to get good at, helping people work together better. So, I jumped in and haven't looked back yet. 

How has your previous experience and career helped define where you are now? Would you have done things differently?

I have been fortunate to have had a wide variety of opportunities to build a broad skillset that has set me up well for supporting my current clients. I have been involved in student leadership development, technical sales, technical design, end-to-end project management, theatre, music, crisis support, did a stint as a television host and am now a parent raising two small humans. All these experiences have absolutely helped shape who I am today and have given me a well-rounded skillset and a unique perspective. 

If I had to do things differently, I would have jumped at one or more doors that opened to me that I was too scared to pursue at the time. Fear of failure is something that has taken me a long time to realize I do suffer from, but I'm happy to say I'm getting better at recognizing it and facing it head on. Having said that, I am very happy with the choices I've made in life and where they have led me so far and the people they have brought into my life. 

Which talent would you most like to have?

I am always in awe of people who are natural networkers, masters of initiating conversations with strangers and forming relationships quickly. I would also really like to be able to play the violin and speak many languages. 

What do you most value in your friends and in colleagues - and are they different things?

I value humility, humour, a love of good food and spending low-stress time together without having detailed plans. In my colleagues I will add reliability and a willingness to jump in and support the team for the success of all. 

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

I don't have a real-life historical kindred-spirit, but I have always identified with my fellow redhead Anne of Green Gables. The girl has got smarts, curiosity, sass, and creativity in spades. 

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Perfect happiness is the knowledge that you are safe where you are, with positive relationships to support you, and the ability to be freely curious about what else there is or is next, whatever that means to you. 

What is your greatest extravagance

I was raised under a philosophy of frugality - but I would have to say cheese and the occasional high-quality chocolate! I am also striving to slowly replenish my wardrobe with high quality locally made clothing - it's been a joy to find new retailers and makers to support. 

What is your motto?

"Il faut s'égarer pour mieux se trouver" (Editor: it translates to "One must lose oneself to find oneself better".)

Finally - You've time travelled back to your 10-year-old self - What advice would you give?

If it excites you and scares you just a little bit - go for it!
